I looked over the description for the book and it sounds very interesting. Does it contain any example code (that can be compiled and run) or does it mainly discuss the persistence technologies at a higher level?
It would appear that a common, simple example threads its ways through the different chapters, so you can get an easy look at how different persistence mechanisms might be written. A very good idea!
