I mean come on Apple, this is unacceptable at all.
5 dollars aren't an astronomical price but Xcode should remain free for all. people will unleash their Torrent.

Sorry, but anytime someone says "Xyz should be free for all" I will roll my eyes. No one is entitled to free anything. There's tons of free stuff out there, and that is magnanimous in the extreme -- but too often it gives people a sense of entitlement and they expect it all the time.

Apparently not anymore. When I looked for Xcode 4 in my developer account it lead me to a page mentioning "iOS/Mac Developer Programs" starting at $99/year. I wonder if new OS X versions will still ship with the Developer Tools DVD in the future.

As an aside, even Microsoft (who understood the importance of cheap developer tools way earlier than Apple) has free basic versions of their tools.

GCC is packaged in Xcode, why I have to pay for it (GCC is vital not only for Objective-C but to many programming languages)?
Not to mention that Objective-C is gaining massive mind share, Apple should (IMO) embrace developers and gaining new ones.
Maybe Xcode 4 for OS X -Pre Lion- is just like FaceTime application, free for OS X Lion but paid for previous releases.

You don't. GCC is available for free, with the added advantage that GCC 4.6 (which Xcode does not yet include) has much improved Objective-C support. Xcode, on the other hand, is an IDE; GCC is just the compiler part of it.

Isn't XCode 4 still a beta??? I have it because I got it when I attended WWDC 10. And I can download it because I am a registered developer. When XCode goes GA, then I am sure it will be given to everyone for free just register without paying and you can download it just like XCode 3 currently is.

But I agree, no one is entitled to anything free regardless of anything. Just be thankful for all the stuff you do get for free, but don't knock someone else's hard work. I am not talking about XCode 4 here, I am talking about anything.

I'm not knocking any one's hard work, all what I'm saying that Xcode doesn't make sense to be paid (IMO, check my previous post).
Actually I'm a huge fan that "Instruments" tools in Xcode were free, really top notch tools.

I don't think it's still beta - at least, there's nothing in my developer account that indicates it is. So - as of right now, I'm a registered developer, and it looks like Apple wants me to part with $99/years to get it (which I'm not going to do, but I'm still hopeful that the next OS X version includes a Developer Tools DVD that includes XCode).

Just noticed that XCode 4 is available in the App Store for $4.99 or €3.99.
