I'm bemused as my IntelliJ does not detect any sort of errors in my Scala class? Is there any setting that I should enable? I use the community edition 11.1.3.

Ok. It was the type aware highlighting that I had to enable. I did that and now I get to see the errors!

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
