I am working in a company since past 4 years and now thinking about looking for other opportunities. There are 2 approaches I can think of:

Approach 1:

This approach says that you are not desperate to somehow get a job but selectively looking for better opportunities. Apply for job selectively to begin with. In job portals, just look for companies which would be your dream companies or dream jobs. If you apply fully and make your resume public you will be bombarded with calls throughout the day whereas you are looking for only good opportunities.Give interview only of the jobs you feel are good in your eyes and resign after that only.

Approach 2:

Apply full fledge. Keep your resume as public in job portals. You will be bombarded with calls. Some may be your dream companies whereas others may be not. Give all interviews irrespective of this. Based on the first interview you clear, resign from the job. Now if this is not a good offer in your eyes then during your 2 months notice period give more interviews. In 2 months time one would have tried out all good ,not so good opportunities. So join the one which you find good.

Approach 3:

In the current company first use few leaves for vacation as in the new company you will have to wait and collect some leaves before you go for a vacation. Then only start job search using Approach 1 or Approach 2 as above.

Please suggest which of the approaches should I follow out of these.

Approach 1 would be my preference. Approach 2 is a little too chaotic for my liking. Approach 3 is personal preference, if you've accrued leave in your current company then you either take it or get paid for it.

Approach 1, definitely.

Also, if you have accrued leave, you may be able use it to shorten your effective notice period in your current job, so you can start at the new company sooner.

If you follow path 2 there is a serious risk of your being in a job you are very unhappy with, this time next year.

Campbell Ritchie says

Thank You.What is the reason for it? Is it the reason that 2 months is too small a period to search for a good job?

No. It is that if you go for interviews indiscriminately, you may get appointed indiscriminately.

When I followed path 2 couple of years ago, my boss gave me an advice of a life time.
He told

If you are so confident that you will get a job of your liking in 3 months notice period, why not get the job in 3 months without resigning

I am trying to understand what your boss said. What does "without resigning" mean here. What difference does it make actually?

This is what you said earlier:-

Satyaprakash Joshii wrote: . . . Some may be your dream companies whereas others may be not. Give all interviews irrespective of this. Based on the first interview you clear, resign from the job. . . .

So, you get a job which isn't in a “dream company”, but more of a nightmare. If you get into that sort of company and are unhappy working there, your colleagues/bosses will be unhappy having you there. How are you going to get a good reference? How are you going to escape?

If you do escape after two months, and end up in another “nightmare company”, your CV/resumé will start having a run of very short jobs in it. That will look suspicious to the next potential employer: “If this chap left his last two jobs so quickly, he might leave us just as quickly. Best not shortlist him.”

But I had said "Based on the first interview you clear, resign from the job" and not "Based on the first interview you clear, resign from the job and join that company". The plan is to get selected in a company , resign and during the notice period give more interviews for 2 months, and then join the best offer out of these. Is 2 months too less for this?

Don't know.

Depends on how long you think you can live with no salary.

I thank everyone on this thread for the good advice. I cleared an interview and got a new job offer with 50% hike. I had gone with approach 3 followed by approach 1.
