Noticed recently that a pc I use with Windows Me installed is very slow in highlighting jar or zip files after they have been mouse-clicked. When the icons of these are clicked, the hard disk LED blinks indicating continuous activity, but the bad part is everything seem to stop while waiting for the icon to be highlighted. Meanwhile, mouse movement is very slow, other tasks also seem to be affected. Everything slows down. Has anybody encountered this situation, and how was it solved?

addendum: the delay can't be noticed if what is being clicked is a small jar or zip file (kBs). Try clicking a zip or jar file of say 40 MB-size or something lower (say 15 MB) in Windows ME and see the the long delay that slows down all other tasks, if not halts them.

I think I'm having the same problem in win2k, but beyond that I have no idea.
From memory it started when I was using a download manager to download a zip file from sun.com and a managed to mess up the download.
I can't remember what I did, but it was pretty stupid (like trying to delete the file while it was downloading or something)
