Hi Vijay,

I highly recommend Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) by Kathy and Bert.

A Programmer's Guide to Java Certification:
A Comprehesive Primer, Second Edition
by Khalid Mughal, Rolf Rasmussen
ISBN:0201728281

This book is excellent for SCJP 1.4 and is not wordy.
Its old version is like what you said for SCJP 1.2
It is worth all dollars you spent in buying it.

where can I find K&B mock exam???

The book Sun Certified Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide (Exam 310-035 & 310-027) by Kathy and Bert (SCJP Ranchers usually refer it as K&B) comes with a CD. You can find two set of mock exams on the CD. Actually, one mock has to be downloaded from the link given on the CD.

Joyce - I take it the mock exam on the K&B CD is written in Java, & will run anywhere with a compatible JRE?

(Just making sure - I don't have a Windows or MacOS box at home, just Linux)

Matt, as far as I know, the mock exams can only run on Windows system. See this thread.

Bah! I ordered the book anyway & had it delivered today. The CD does indeed seem rather pants but the book itself is pure gold.

K&B book is essential. They helped create the real exam.

Mughal gives more complete coverage, not needed for the SCJP exam but needed for working with Java.

SCJP has very tricky questions, start practicing with K&B mocks in book and on disk. Consider Sun's $75 mock exam set.

Lots of free mock exams and other good advice are here:
