The Member ID of Paul Wheaton (who is the Trail Boss here) is 74.
But the member id of Jim Yingst is 01, and he is a Greenhorn

It seems there were 73 folks registered here, before Paul did.

Take a look at "From one of the oldest member of Javaranch" to see when Jim Yingst (member #290, # posts > 18,000) took over account number 1.

If I recall correctly, the numbering system was slightly strange following a much earlier migration (possibly from Electric Pork Chop), which is why Paul is #73.

Regards, Andrew

Jim only has over 18000 posts when viewed by a moderator. When viewed by everyone else, who can't see many of his posts, the system reports that he has just over 12000 posts.... Either way, that is a lot of posts !!

I think that is because of the moderators-only forum. Isn't it?

Kathy had no forums on her original site. Paul had a site with forums. Paul took over both operations and merged them. Then the forums migrated through several versions of software; all the member records and posts from the earliest forum were not brought along unchanged (the way they were when we did this latest migration.) As a result, many of the lowest member numbers do not represent the order in which the members joined the site. A member with a two-digit member number did indeed join the site many years ago, but the lowest member numbers are akin to hash codes in some long-forgotten hash table.

I created the forums and, thus, the very first account.

I think what happened was that the first version of the forums did not have user numbers - just the user name. So when I upgraded the forum software to a version that had user ID's, numbers were created for everybody.

Later, we were talking about this very thing and Jim tinkered a bit with the account for user number 1. For fun. I'm pretty sure he doesn't use it - he uses account 290.

You can see a rough history of JavaRanch at http://www.javaranch.com/history.jsp

Kathy took JavaRanch offline sometime around august/september 1999. I'm pretty sure she never saw my java site until I contacted her in late 99. In October of 2002 she created an account on the forums. By then we had user numbers, so her account number is 37766. She was a prolific poster and really had the touch for cowboy speak. It's too bad she doesn't spend much time here these days.
