I am using Yahoo mail and have tried my gmail account as well but my assignments keep getting sent back to me with formatting errors. I am using plain text as requested and putting them in the body of the email. I copy and past from Notepad++. Does any one have any suggestions. Currently, I have to type it in character by character.

I'm not sure what sort of formatting errors you are being nitpicked on ... I wonder if you can clarify.

1) tabs vs spaces? Does Notepad++ have something that automatically converts tabs to spaces or vice-versa (particularly when you save the file)?

2) everything on one side (i.e. no indentation) ... that's usually an email client issue if it is consistent. One thing you can check is to be sure you aren't using the html formatting in your email client. Yahoo is usually pretty good at preserving formatting.

It screws up the indentation, some of the braces are in the wrong place, and some of the lines are indented incorrectly.

Seems to me I also had this problem with yahoo.

Does the formatting problem happen if you send the email to yourself as a test?

An idea, pay the $20 annual fee to upgrade your yahoo to premium. Once it's upgraded you can pickup and send email from your yahoo mail account using Thunderbird. I think you can do a free trial on the upgrade. You may have better control of the email message formatting using a local email client like thunderbird.

When using Thunderbird what I do is use the Portable version of Thunderbird on a USB drive so I can pick up messages on any computer I use. I believe Thunderbird can also be set up to pickup the messages but leave the original on the yahoo sever for web access. If you send from Thunderbird you would cc yourself so a copy goes into your inbox on yahoo server.

I don't use Notepad++, but the Intertubes suggest:
Settings -> Preferences... -> Language Menu/Tab Settings -> Tab Settings (group) -> Replace by space
would convert tabs to spaces.

I'm generally not too concerned with mail clients mangling up the code. Usually what happens is the lines get wrapped too early. The last submission I got had not indentation whatsoever for the HTML, and that makes it hard to read. If that's happening to you, and it's because your mail client is removing all leading tabs for some reason, then using spaces instead should fix the problem. The vast majority of coding styles guides I've come across recommend using spaces anyway.
