Do you use Homebrew or MacPorts? Any particular reason you use one over the other?

I use MacPorts because I didn't know about Homebrew. And not sure which is better.

I am sure there are many opinions out there in the interwebs. ;)

This post is a bit old but a colleague at work turned me on to Homebrew. Very nice, probably the single most useful tool other than maybe Sublime that I have found so far in my limited experience with Mac. I had not played with MacPorts but did some googling just now, and the only downside I have read to Homebrew is the number of ports is still greater in MacPorts. There were many, many other blogs, stories comments, and tweets about why people preferred Homebrew. I did not find a single post about anyone switching from Homebrew to Macports it always went the other direction. I think based on all the reading I have done I will stick with Homebrew.

I'm pretty sure that every one has his own opinion when it comes to such questions.
Personally and after trying MacPorts and Homebrew, I decided to adopt Homebrew. Homebrew is actively maintained and developed and it enjoys a huge umbrella of formulas (software packages).
Updating an installed formula is ridiculously easy, you just type:

brew upgrade formula_name

And it is done!

We find this kind of rampant individuality very disturbing. But not this tiny ad:
