Although the java certification will give your resume a certain standard and a preference in your job hunt, solely having a certification wont fetch you a job. Certification is just for being thorough with your concepts. You are not yet a programmer unless you start doing some projects. Start making simple java applications and then move on to complex ones. Only if you have a lot of projects with you, HR will even consider hiring you. Mere certification wont help. It is just a step.

Having a certification does not grantee you the job but would help if all candidates are freshers.

Hello there,

I am also a fresher and preparing to clear certification exams in Java SE 7. It's always good to go for certifications and having your skill set verified with the technology owner. Certification provides an universal acceptance. Try to clear your certification exams while you are in college itself. This will definitely give you an edge over other freshers.

Best of Luck.

OCAJP is actually very good for college students who want to make a career in Java programming. Once you enter work force, you will not get much time or motivation to iron out the kinks in your understanding. Many programmers keep making the same or related mistake again and again just because they never had their fundamentals right in the first place. Studying for this certification will give you a firm understanding on fundamental s and it will go a long way. Not just for Java but for programming in general as well.

sriman roop,

Doing OCAJP certification will improve your knowledge in Java fundamentals, however the current version may not be useful for your career after couple of years. So I recommend you to wait till your final year to take latest Java certification (it may be OCA Java 8 or OCA Java 9).

I disagree. Java version 8 hasn't been released yet. Also, Oracle hasn't announced release of new Java certifications based on Java version 8/9. So its not feasible to determine when a new Java certification based on Java 8 will be made available.

With respect,
Mala

Sriman,

A Java certification will improve your chances of being noticed and hence landing a better job, as compared to your uncertified peers.

For a fresher, a resume with Java certification is preferred over a similar resume without a certification and is prioritized during the candidate evaluation process.

Java certification preparation will bridge your knowledge gaps and the certification itself will validate your proficiency in Java. The knowledge that you earn while preparing for the certification will help you to answer tricky interview questions and later perform better at your work.

With respect,
Mala
