Hi everyone,

I did my Masters degree in Computer Science some years ago now, which involved a lot of programming in C and Java. I really enjoyed it at the time, but my work since then has mainly been in Sys Admin/Support roles. I have come to realise over the years, however, that programming is the life for me! So last year I passed my OCPJP (SE 6) and now I'm really keen to get some real world experience.

I'm enthusiastic about getting work experience, in whatever form that may come. So I'm open to volunteering and internships, as well as full and part-time jobs. I should mention that I live in Sydney, Australia.

I'd also be interested to hear your advice on the next steps to making myself more employable. Should I start another certification, or should I be adding skills that compliment the core Java that I have studied? Or just trying to write lots of code?

You can read a bit more about me here http://jsbl.org

Thanks!

Welcome to the Ranch

Your post seems more general than “I am looking for a job”, so I shall duplicate it in another jobs forum in the hope you get more responses there.

John,
Welcome to CodeRanch! I edited out your email because we ask folks to use the forum.

Are you still employed as a system admin? If so, there is an opportunity to do a real world program and gain experience. Most companies will let you work "free overtime" to gain experience with something. Maybe you could make a web app in Java that makes submit†ing requests to the system admin team easier. Or solves some problem you have.

At the moment I'm just writing little programs that I find useful, or trying to replicate programs that already exist, just to see if I can do it. And of course reading lots of books too.

Thanks for the replies, I'm sure I'll be spending a lot more time on these forums as well!

Of course, I found a very beautiful couch. Definitely. And this tiny ad:
