Can anybody explain this situation to me? In particular, what did she do that was "disrespectful and insulting" enough to possibly warrant jail time?

Shoes are not allowed inside the Taj Mahal. They take your shoes and give you feet covers when you enter. I believe photography is not allowed inside the Taj Mahal.

It's a mausoleam not a museum. One of India's greatest kings built it as the final resting place for his Queen as a mark of respect for his wife. Also, generally, in India, elevating once shoes is seen as mark of disrespect. So, not only bringing shoes into Taj Mahal is disrespectful because she broke a very important rule that her guests had laid out but also not giving the proper respect to someone's final resting place is disrespectful

Even though the Miss Universe foundation is ultimately responsible, Olivia Culpo doesn't get a pass because she was "just following orders". She knew she wasn't supposed to bring shoes in.

Thanks for the info, Jayesh. I thought it was it was mainly because they didn't get permission to shoot for commercial purpose. She (or her troupe) lied about her purpose of the photo shoot. They were actually shooting for an ad.
