I'm a pretty poor artist (actually I'm appalling). Is there any software that can generate a simple image for hills ie you just key in the dimensions, perhaps say what type of hills/mountains, darkness, shading etc. This is an example that was produced for me before by an artist but I feel guilty keep going back to the poor guy.

My aim with the new game is to have it based on Mars (so it would need to be more red). It needs to be a longer image as well as the player can scroll from side to side. I also would like to create a couple of layers of hills so I can create some artificial depth to the view. I can use paint dot net but I'm pretty clueless with what effect to use. I guess there isn't a dedicated tool to do this but I thought I'd ask anyway.

Mike

PS if anyone wants to write one then it would be an interesting project
You might want options for splitting the image into sections and options to set the resolution etc.

I've had great success in the past with http://planetside.co.uk/products/download-tg3 - Terragen is a brilliant application, it might help you along quite nicely.

I've had a play with it and it seems to be able to produce some excellent results. Sadly I can't work out head nor tail on how it works though. It's a shame they don't have a simpler interface. I'm currently chatting to the guys on paint dot net (a free paint tool) and they're trying to knock together and simple tutorial on how to create an acceptable world. God managed it in 7 days but I'm assuming he has access to some pretty classy software ;)

There are some nice YouTube tutorials available for both products, it looks like a lot of tinkering is involved

Good luck!
