I need to read a text file from a client machine. Rite now i'm doing it through ActiveXObjects using javascript. Since ActiveXObject is Microsoft based, it doesn't work in other browsers except IE. IS there any other method to read ? Please advice. TIA.

So this is on the client side of a web app? A signed Java applet would be one way, if you can persuade your users to run Java in the browser.

Perhaps you can ask the user (of the web application) to upload the file, in which case the user will be presented with a file browser on the client side.

It can't be handled like asking user to upload the file everytime.application should directly read from the client system.

Why can't it be handled like that? If the answer is "that's my requirement"; then you may need to challenge this requirement. Technologies like ActiveX and applets have fallen out of favor for various reasons (like compatibility and security), and should no longer be used.

Applets have already been mentioned. But it seems that you're missing point that you should not do this.

Then file client-side upload seems a viable approach. It can be made pretty user-friendly these days if need be (using jQuery plugins, for example).
