I don't think people here will be particularly minded to help someone who uses fraudulent means in the workplace.

I'm not familiar with the laws in your country, but I doubt that fraud gets regarded as a mistake; criminal offence is more likely.

I don't know what you got by quoting your current salary as 24K as against 20K, is it you got more hike based on this?

To start with you gave a forged salary certificate. Not wrong certificate.
Consequences according to me can be blacklisted for life or / and jail.

What is a background check normally anyway? I have the same thing on my offer. I did not give any false information though. I thought they would only check whether I am a potential terrorist.

Reject the offer immediately, find another job, and give the proper documentation this time. HR departments of big companies along with NASSCOM maintain an unofficial employee blacklist. If they find out you've defrauded them, your name goes on the blacklist and you'll find it impossible to get another job in a big company.

Jan,
It depends on the company. It could be just verifying that you worked at the employer you say you did. It could be verifying other information in your application. It could be checking you aren't a criminal. It could be checking your credit history.
