The flash cards are online, along with the review and practice exams. Flash cards help hone your ability by testing your skills in a quicker and more rapid manner than a review question.

Can you create your own flash cards online as well? Are these flash cards optimized for use on a mobile device (e.g. smartphone, tablet)?

You cannot create your own flashcards using the software that renders the ones from the book. I recommend Anki for custom flashcards. I've used it to study for many exams. It uses spaced repetition so you see the things you are less strong in more often. And the flashcards are synced between laptop/tablet/mobile/web/etc.

I haven't tried the flashcards from the system on a mobile device. It's a good question; I'll try tonight. I'm sure a tablet is fine. I suspect a phone isn't, but I want to try before I say so.

Ok, now I've tried. It was fine on my iPad. On my BlackBerry, the flashcards worked, but I had to zoom in and then scroll around so it wasn't as nice. Not a reactive design for small screens.
