Here is an interesting article about how the Enigma and Lorenz codes were cracked during WWII.

It's interesting to hear it from the point of view of the workers. History is usually tales of famous heroes. Which ignores... a whole lot The easiest good cypher I ever heard of is using an unknown language. E.g. Navajo code talkers.

I'm not sure the code talkers count as a cypher.

Code talkers would not count as a cypher.

No. A code is understood by those who know the code; apparently in the troubles in Bosnia 20 years ago, the British forces used Welsh speakers to communicate secret messages, since the chance of anybody there understanding Welsh were minimal.
A cypher is something not understood by whoever knows the cypher (until the message is deciphered).

Say you knew the cypher so well that you could decipher the message instantly as you heard the message. Is it no longer a cyphered message?

You mean like a Caesar cypher?

Even a Caesar cypher has to be deciphered, even though it is a very simple procedure.

The Enigma story is fascinating. There's quite a lot of read on Wikipedia about the deciphering efforts. What I find most astonishing about the "breaking Enigma" story is that one unfortunate decision (unfortunate to Wehrmacht, that is) - to type the message key twice - has given such a great advantage to people trying to decipher it.

I saw this movie called the imitation game tonight, about this topic, probably why these interest items on this subject have been dropped. I think today was DVD release. Not a good movie really. Turned facts into clichés easy to grasp with one eye open. It's all there. I think most people interested in the subject matter would rather see a good documentary, Bad idea for a movie but it does get Turing's name out there, which is good. One of the movie makers said you don;t fact check a Monet and Monet isn't realistic. Ok, yeah but by the same token Monet is far from cliché!
