CodeRanch is offering 1 free ticket (yes, a free ticket!) to Erlang Factory Lite and Kats Conf 15 which are scheduled for 11 - 12 September 2015 in central Dublin.

The events boast top quality talks, lightening talks, and workshops from hand selected international and local expert speakers from the Functional Programming community, with Keynotes by Joe Armstrong the creator of Erlang.

To stand a chance of winning the ticket, all you have to do is enter our fun poetry competition, posting your entries in this very thread. You can even post more than once. The entry that we, the CodeRanch staff, think is the best will win the ticket.

The contest will end on Tuesday 18th August, with the winner announced on Wednesday 19th August. Good luck, and have fun!!

The Competition: Haiku for Kats

Taken from Wikipedia: A haiku in English is a very short poem in the English language, following to a greater or lesser extent the form and style of the Japanese haiku. A typical haiku is a three-line observation about a fleeting moment...

The logo/mascot for Kats Conf is a functional programming loving cat, so the challenge is to write a Haiku, a short 3 line poem of roughly 5, 7, then 5 syllables, that incorporates some aspect or characteristic of cats and functional programming.

For example:

tail twitching with joy
crafting clojure in the sun
the sweetness of dreams

As long as the poem is a 3 lines, and short, there are no hard rules about the length or number of syllables allowed in a Haiku, so you are free to be as creative as you please.

Another shorter example:

The full stop
eluded his paws
oh erlang

Got the idea? Great! Let's see what you've got Good luck!

Claws break into skin,
kitten Walt needs attention,
but Java must run

This is probably unclear, so I should say that we rescued a little white kitten a few days ago. We named him Walt, after Walter White (White coat of fur!).

He can barely meow at the moment, but his teeth have developed and he loves biting everything around him. He also likes climbing on peoples shoulders and sleeps A LOT.

As for the rest of the Haiku, I'm pretty much always doing something in Java.

Even the cats meow
at the rise of Erlang's bough
surely, lofty heights are attained strough.

A nimble cat
been powered with the ability of recursion
scribbled carefully the most alluring snippets.

Praise bounteous
providence if you will
that grants even a cat, to perceive lambdas!

Dexterous paws knitting
basket full of Haskell
basking in its wholesomeness

Voracious cats set upon
Erlang and ate
In bliss, they chewed recursion

Cats are playful
Erlang's pure functions are useful
Their combination is beautiful
