I worked in all tiers except for Business tier. Have to learn EJBs.

For the architect exam, you don't need to know "how to program/code" per se but what the technologies are, when to use them, pros & cons.

Of course able to code them is good to have. For EJB, you can check out EJB 3 in Action 2e book by Debu Panda published by Manning.
