Many of my setups require a huge Hard disk and that too .. need to be scraped repeatedly Sometimes Installations that span 90GB deployments.

Keeping in view the huge techstacks running , I have upgraded the Memory to 2GB instead of 512 that it comes with. CPU is dual core that is 5 times faster i guess should not become a bottleneck.

Now what you thinking about this plan...

I am thinking of getting a 100GB+ (say300GB)external drive attach it with Apple using firewire. and keep my entire OS (which can be Linux/Suse etc)and the 90GB install on it fully working (Fully working as in the external device has the Oracle DB installed, AppServer installed and a few other things ).

Thinking from point of view of the external hard disk there will be a lot of I/O happening.
1) Will mac firewire be able to handle such a load?
(Firewire was a key thing for Data transfer) when i boot from that device my whole setup should be available.

2)Does anyone see any fundamental mistake in my thinking about the external hard disk
3)Has anyone tried this before.

Thanks

I'm just learning about external drives myself, but it sounds like you will want the external drive to have its own power supply. My understanding is that drives powered through firewire ("portable" drives) are significantly slower than firewire drives that have their own power supply. Other than that, I'm afraid I can't offer much advice in this area.
