Can I embed a hyperlink in a GIF file?

Can I embed a hyperlink (using an image editing software) in an image file (GIF) without cahnging the file format?

There would not be any point in doing that unless programs that displayed GIFs could interpret an included hyperlink. So I tracked down the GIF specification. It does not mention URLs or links as far as I can see.

You can put an image map behind the picture so different zones of the image go to different links. The experts may whip me for this, but I've only done it with FrontPage and didn't even look at the generated HTML so I can't tell you how to do it the hard way.

I mentioned about a GIF format but not a HTML format. If you make hyperlink to an image in Frontpage, can you extract that image and save it in a GIF format without giving up the hyperlinks?

(Note: Most of the image editing softwate support a feature called "image map", which makes it possible to give hyperlinks to images and store that file in HTML format)
