Is there any book which shows you how to make a simple system which allows you to let your website interact with a mobile phone or PDA?? Can you recommend anything with proper examples?
Is it possible to do this stuff at home with a mobile and just a windows pc?

There are some web services client libraries for J2ME, but somehow I feel that you're not talking about web services as in "SOAP messages", are you?

Function - I want to be able to update a database from invoking a method on my mobile phone for example!

Alright then. First of all, you need to use HTTP as the underlying protocol because that's the only protocol required from MIDP devices. On the server-side, you can use the regular J2EE stuff (a servlet, for example).
There are a number of MIDP/HTTP tutorials around the Internet. I'd suggest googling for them and starting there. Also, practically all J2ME books cover HTTP networking with MIDP at least to some degree.

I would have guessed J2ME in the cell phone and WAP for the protocol, but then again, that would just be a hunch.

Ah. True. WAP is always an option if the network supports it.
However, soon it's XHTML-MP (WAP 2.0) that's running the show...
