Has any thought been given to supporting a limited set of HTML tags when posting on JavaRanch? It'd be nice if there were radio buttons in my profile, for instance, that would allow me to select whether I want to use the HTML style or UBB style of posting...that way, existing posters wouldn't have to change their behavior but people like me that are used to posting in other HTML-supporting forums as well get a break.

The software we're using doesn't support such a feature. You will notice however that some forums allow limited HTML, but most don't because often you want the ACTUAL HTML code to be shown.

I popped over and read the rest of the FAQ again when you posted your response to my last question, just as a refresher. Is the new forum for this site still under development? When's it slated for release? Just wondering...

Development has slowed down. Ernest and I were the lead developers but my wife has been very sick and Ernest's wife just had a baby so neither of us have had the time to spend working on the new forum.

The problem with allowing HTML code in a forum is that there is a risk of someone either slipping an annoying mistake into the code (such as an unclosed XMP tag) causing the rest of the page to be malformed, or worse, a naughty bit of javascript. At least UBB gives the site admins a bit more control over the display of the text. Besides, image how awful it'd look if everyone could post in different fonts and colours

Oooh I like the orange!

I've just spent half an hour trying to get some xml code to appear in a posting in the CattleDrive forum - I couldn't get the code to appear even using the "CODE" brackets, but then suddenly remembered that it might be possible to use the HTML "<" and ">" and that did the trick (I had to turn off "show smilies" as the oracle command was appearing with a smiley in the middle!)
All the best,
Kate!!

Shhhh! Not so loudly! Don't let everyone know. The smilies are bad enough, imagine if everyone had multi-coloured signatures and multi-fonted replies...... Javaranch would be a no-go zone on a monday morning.....
