Where in the unamended JLS is the language that involves subclasses? I'm looking in 8.4.7 and there's nothing.

In JLS 15.12.2.2, it's the bit about T's and U's.
T can be converted to U by method invocation conversion.
Tj can be converted to Uj by method invocation conversion, for all j from 1 to n.
