why use a mail server like cmail?

i know this is a very lame question but i really don't know why we use a mail server when we can do send and relieve mail using the java mail. can some one explain to me.

JavaMail can't send mail without a mail server either.

so you mean to say that when i start my cmail server instead of giving the smtp of the gmail i cant give that cmail server smtp right.

No, exactly the opposite: if you run your own mail server then you can use that instead of Gmail.
