Is it reasonable to provide SSN on a confidentiality agreement with the contracting firm (this is before starting to work with them)? Just need some thought on this.

The contract is legally binding without an SSN. I've never given my SSN to company prior to employment, except for a background check. This sounds fishy. Sign the agreement (if you agree to it) but leave off your SSN.

They need it for payroll deductions, if they have hired you and intend to pay you. Up to that point it's none of their business.

SSN is required only for tax forms and such (and probably social security applications) (in the US). Any other use is actually illegal.

In other countries the rules are different. In the Netherlands for example it's also printed on your passport and used in almost all communications with and by the government.
But here too any other use is NOT normal (even if it may be legal which is doubtful).
