it's not long since the release of 1.5, but where's 5.0 from? Is it just the one in new version system mapping to the old 1.5?

I just feel a little bit curious, why did Sun do that? any ideas

Java 1.5 is not old. In fact, after reading your question, I see that it has been officially released. Until now, I was only aware of the beta. Java 1.5 is the same as J2SE 5.0.

one word: marketing.

We now have Java 2 SDK 5.0 version 1.5.0
We used to have Java 2 SDK 1.4.0
Originally it was simply JDK 1.1.0

Maybe in a few years someone will come up with a way to add even more numbers

it became java 2 when it was 1.2
so it becomes java 5 when its 1.5. But appearantly they are wimps and hedging. so its not quite Java 5...

no, it doesn't become Java 5.
It didn't become Java 3 or Java 4 either
