Well I guess it was inevitable. When you see a Starbucks in the Piney woods of East Texas, you gotta know that thangs jest won't be the same no more. I can see it now, Rednecks sippin' on lattes in their dualies. What's next pink chaps, gun control? I tell ya it's a Mexican consipiracy, they still ain't got over that little ass-kickin' we gave 'em back in 1836.

Hey Michael, I've heard that this southern style of speech comes from ebonics. Is that true or is there some other explanation? More generally, can you describe an "average Texan" for us in here?
Thanks,
Eugene.

Mathematically, average may refer to mean, median, or mode. Of the three options, a mean Texan will probably be easiest to find.

Elaine Micheals: Ebonics? Naw.
Well, my source is Lila: An Inquiry into Morals. The author is actually better known by his book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values. In "Lila", he gets into history and claims that the Southern accent is the result of the slaves passing their way of talking to the owners.

Yeah, I meant to say "A Texan who falls within one standard deviation away from the mean, i.e. represents 68% of the Texans". I would venture a guess that the Texans' distribution curve is actually leptokurtic, -- higher than normal mean and fatter than normal tails.
Eugene.

Hmmm... so Michael, what are the standard deviations for Texans? Can you find someone with only one?

"Y'all" can be either singular or plural, just like "you." Its relatively recent tendency towards singularity has led to the emergence of the currently-plural-only variant "all y'all."
(There are those who would disagree with what I just wrote, but I'd say they're on a river cruise in Egypt.)

I believe he's in the part that includes Michigan. It's a BIG state, I understand...

Sigh. I'm so disillusioned. What's the point of having a second-person plural if all y'all are just going to bastardize it? Not the first time either - it happened to the original "you" as well, though that wasn't all y'all's fault I guess; it was those Brits who did it. So, will this process continue? Over the next few centuries, I can imagine a succession of newer variants initially created to be plural-only and subsequently bastardized, creating the need for yet newer variants:
you
y'all
all y'all
all y'alls
alls y'alls
the bunch of alls y'alls
bunches of alls y'alls
hey, you!
Where does it all end?
