You could contribute to open-source projects.

Useful article: http://opensource.ucc.ie/icse2002/HannRobertsSlaughterFielding.pdf

Why participate in open source Java projects?

-- You can learn from and enhance your coding skills by looking at others code.
-- You can get feedback from others on your code.
-- You can enhance your ability to understand problems and develop effective solutions for it.
-- You can proudly mention your contribution on your resume.

If you are still not convinced, go to http://seeker.dice.com/jobsearch and search for "open source".

Where do I look for open source projects?

Presumably when you were working you had a network of coworkers and employers. Contact them and let them know if they have any projects that need an extra hand you are available.
IMHO, working on an open-source project may get you some experience which may look good on a resume, but if you are looking for a job now, the people who know you and what your skills have to offer will probably pay off sooner.

thanks for your help.
I have few questions. Currently I am staying in zurich, switzerland.
1.do I need any permission to work on any open source project?
2. can any body tell me how much experience is required to work in this project?

I think there was a miscommunication. An open source project is volunteer work, it's not a part time job. I'm not sure why it was recommended since it doesn't seem to be relevant to what you asked.

If you indeed want a work at home job, you should look on job boards. Two good ones to start with are www.elance.com and www.guru.com.
