I want to purchase a new laptop.

I am very much confused with it, I even can't decide the features I want because of little knowledge.

In general, my requirements are:

A reasonably fast processor and enough RAM to run applications like eclipse, WSAD
DVD
Display size (should not be an issue)
Camera-not required
OS-XP

Not sure, which company is providing good? What other features I should look for, those might be very important but I don't know now?

Please help.

Thanks.

edit:

Have you been looking at some laptops? it's easier if you come with
a number of laptops and then get feedback on those...

Well, I've seen the MacBook for around 9000 kr which is quite cheap
for a mac, but I dont know if your interested in a Mac. I think the
black one looks super cool, but it also costs 1000 kr more.

I little fanatic post, don't you think? Not every VAIO is good...personal experience.

At least you could write pros and cons.

And what's more....wouldn't it be nice to have all prices in US dollars? I (and many of us) dont understand all currencies of the world.

Whatever you decide, do NOT buy a Dell - this is from my personal experience.

P.S: Isn't it a coincidence their name rhymes with "Hell"??

True. But prices vary wildly around the world.
A laptop costing $1000 in the US might cost twice that in Europe or half that in Hong Kong.

Yes I know. But in this you have no choice.

To the topic. I prefer IBM Thinkpad T series. Thin, powerful and their software is the best I have seen. Yes, it is little bit expensive, but for professional good choice. Some people don't like their black design, some people want sheen silver notebook. But I'm conservative and like these books.

What features to look for? It depens on your needs. Write what do you expect from your notebook and you will raise chances, that people will help you in decision.

Note: The affected batteries (in Dell and Apple laptops) were made by Sony.

this is what i use
http://www.cybershop.net.au/Notebooks/ToshibaSatelliteA100.shtml

i found that 256 wasn't fast enough so I added a 512 on top of that.

been using this for more than a year, no complaints so far.

How much is this in US$?

My advice is buy the one that has Core Duo processor, and has at least 512 MB of RAM (although 1 GB or more is better).
In Indonesia, you can buy this for about US$ 1000.

Sorry, I missed this point.

Well, as I said earlier also, I will run application like WSAD, eclipse or portal server at max, should have DVD player for entertainment, what else?

Camera no need.
Bluetooth if not affecting much in price then okay otherwise not needed.

Thats all my requirement I can think of now.

I will go for 1 GB RAM.

If 2 GB is not making big difference then can go for that also...

Lots of tongue-in-cheek in this thread

Seriously, I understand that computers are expensive, but it seems to me that people often undervalue their own time when buying a computer. If you save some money upfront, but don't get a quality product, then you'll quickly chew up your savings in lost time

I'm a huge fan of OS X for that reason. I used Window$ OSes for years and I found that they wasted a lot more of my time than OS X does.

Also, don't underestimate the productivity gain of adding more pixels! IMHO this is one of the most important differentiating features between laptops.

Good point Bert. Care to elaborate on the last part of the quote? is OS X
"faster" than win xp for instance, or how should it be understood.

Speaking only for myself (obviously not Bert)...

I haven't performed any objective testing, but my impression is that Macs are, in fact, much faster than comparable Windows machines. I don't "wait" for my Mac to do things.

But more important than saving a few seconds here and there, I'm far more productive using a Mac because:
  • I spend virtually no time performing system maintenance, dealing with errors, or recovering from crashes.
  • Everything is so intuitive and straight-forward that I don't waste a lot of time figuring out how to do something -- which is especially interesting because I've struggled with Windows for over a decade, but I've worked with Macs for little more than a year. Basically, everything works the way you would expect, if not easier!
  • Mac apps tend to be loaded with useful convenience features. For example, the Mac browser, Safari, spell checks when filling out forms, has right-click options for web searching, dictionary lookup, and Spotlight (like Google Desktop), has built-in RSS, etc.
  • I can actually do multiple things at once without fear of crashing or freezing.

Personally, I have not had any problems with software availability -- nor with file compatibility. (Note that MS Office is available for Mac.) I would add that Mac apps don't mess up other apps: I've never had any settings changed that I didn't want or expect.

However, I'm not a gamer, so I can't speak to that issue. Macs are not the best choice for everyone, but I do think they deserve serious consideration. From my experience, most people's apprehensions over switching turn out to be unfounded.

I literally spent years investigating Macs before switching -- even buying a new Dell desktop while I remained unconvinced. When I finally switched, I could only wonder what took me so long, and why so many people still use Windows.

    Basically, what Marc said

I wasn't talking about raw speed - to me they're all pretty close unless you have a really unique kind of work to do. ASAIC it's all about being hassle-free and worry-free - sometimes I'l be working along and notice that I have 15 windows open - and I don't get all freaked out that I'm inches away from a blue screen of death.

I also agree that OS X and the related software is just a lot more intuitive and pleasant to work with - again, I value the experience, and for me OS X is a much, much nicer experience than any flavor of Window$ that I've ever seen. Then there's the whole virus thing...stop me before I sound like an Apple ad

For one thing, Mac OS X is only for Apple computers. It doesn't run on machines by HP, IBM, Lenovo, Dell, etc.

(But if you need to, you can run Microsoft XP on the new Intel Macs.)
