Forget about semi-finals...

1996 WC finalists Australia reached the finals in 1999 and 2003 and they won both of them, I hope the same for India this time.

I bet Mandira Bedi and Chetan Parekh will say the same. Can I add ankur rathi also?

I guess they do!
Here is a little history lesson for you..

"The 1983 World Cup was full of dramatic cricket right from the word go with underdogs India and Zimbabwe staging upset victories over the West Indies and Australia, respectively. Along with England, Pakistan and tournament favourites West Indies, India too qualified to the semifinals. India pulled off yet another victory, this time over England to meet the West Indies in the finals."

complete article

That's the game of cricket for you. If it can happen then it can happen anytime! Its about the nature of the "game" not on the "team". Period.

Yes! You were saying something..!? (Just kidding.)

That is why people smell match fixing there.

The report explains that small-scale betting on cricket matches had taken place in India for many years - but it became big business, with bookmakers making huge profits, after India won the World Cup in 1983.

Many of the cricket threads have gotten out of control. There is much... passion... among the fans, that threads quickly become nasty, bitter, and not what we want here. I, personally, do not understand such passion, but that doesn't matter.

Be aware that all cricket threads are being a little more carefully monitored, and we will not hesitate to yank them if things go south.

I don't understand ANYBODY'S passion over ANY sport - US, Indian, British, Astralian, German... whatever. But that's just me.

And being passionate is fine. it's when that passion FOR your team turns into HATRED for fans of/players on a DIFFERENT team.

Cheer your team, discuss trades, plays, calls, whatever. Just don't be mean or rude to anyone else.

that's all i mean.

I was under the impression that India was pretty highly-ranked in field hockey, too. (You probably just call it "hockey" but in Canada "hockey" defaults to ice hockey.)

The trend for a WC final seems to be

Australia vs Asian Country

1996: Aus vs SL
2000: Aus vs Pak
2003: Aus vs Ind

Going by the above trend, its gonna be Aus vs Bangladesh.

Hmmm...instead of being so abstract, can you tell us what changes you would make to this team to make it look stronger on paper, and on field?

errr.. Banglasdesh, England, New Zealand... the list is growing

I cant WAIT to see the Australians implode and get knowcked out! Its about time arrogance and a sense of entitlement was knocked out of the Australian cricket team and nobody would laugh harder than me Ricky ponting had to eat some serious humble pie!

(Typically - in his recent post match speach after losing the CBA trophy to England he didnt even mention that England had played well and beaten them comprehensively - he just said "We made a few mistakes and thats something we will be able to correct"... )

Aussies hve lost 6 or their last 7 ODIs or so. This includes a first ever 10 wkt loss and now a white wash by black caps.
What's happening DOM? Ozzies injury list too is just getting longer.

Sit tight with your pop-corns ready folks, WC 07 looks pretty open

Same thing I've been saying for the last two years.

Recap (my opinion):
The Oz selectors have been aiming at the World Cup for the last two years and have been concentrating on maintaining the same side rather than looking at giving new blood and experience to new up-and-comers and trying to decode who should really at the WC. The current complete focus on the WC will probably work to the detriment of Australian cricket in the long run and now looks to have fallen apart on the eve of the competition.

Hayden shouldn't be there. Sure he's had a couple of good knocks recently, but if his position had been given to someone else at the start of the previous tri-nations we could now have a long term replacement.

They should be looking to fill Gilly's shoes now. There are two or three other batsmen-keepers in the state comp that are blocked from getting a run due to Gilly's vice captaincy. I'm a big fan of Adam Gilchrist, but it's too important a position.

Players like Clarke, Johnson, White, Hodge and several others have shown promise but not given the opportunity to gain confidence at this level. Looking at the players that are still likely to retire soon, the selectors needed to look at the long term structure of the team a year ago.

Another lesson, based on the recent form in NZ, is that you can't suddenly alter the structure of a team and expect it to perform the same. The selectors probably saw that the NZ tour would be a challenge with that line up, but it probably caused more harm than good.

I think that we all hope that the losses will give the team a little more perspective (ie less arrogance) and personally I hope this creates a resolve that will get them to the WC finals. Or it may have broken their backs and the team will be a joke, we'll see what effect bringing Ponting back has.

Thing is when you are failing to defend 350 odd scores, little can Ponting return do. The bowling really looks wayward ... being hit all over the park. However that young bloke Tait looks awesome, with his action bowling six 150km/hr each over is simply amazing.
However, I feel Aussies are lucky to see this happening prior to WC. I don't think they would get similar drubbing in WC. Too good a team to write off.

I disagree. Why do you think captains field in close and constantly consult the bowler? In the case of an experienced captain (and Ponting does OK) they can provide better direction to the bowler and perform small field changes to keep the batsmen unsettled.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
