I want to import some data from a text file on user’s system into the Applet.
Can any one please suggest, how I can achieve this?

As far as Java code is concerned, the same way you would do it in an application. But you'll have to sign the applet before it can be permitted to do that.
 
Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
