Does anyone know if there is a way or a plugin or a 3rd party downloadable thingy that will show a perpetual status when I have new mail? I tried GrowlMail but it isn't really what I want. I know the Mail icon shows the number of new messages, but I hide my dock, so it serves no purpose for me. I'd like a small mail icon to show up next to my clock, wifi, battery, etc notification area.

Yes, using Gmail, but also have other types of accounts and using Mail.app. Was hoping there might be something that works with it.

Looks like if you have POP3 enabled, you can do it.

Thanks but bleh, no pop3 for me, horrible protocol. I just would rather there be some Mail.app plugin or feature that says "Display new mail icon on menu bar". Other apps have this like Growl, Adium, etc.

I've not tried these, but Hawk Wings Apple Mail Plug-ins page lists two plugins that might work for you - MailUnreadStatusBar and Mail Unread Menu
