I've had success with Trinity Rescue Kit. The Live CD runs Linux, but the AV provided works on Windows.

I don't have a Linux installed on my machine. Does it make a difference? I understand I am just going to put the CD in the drive, let it scan through on my windows and take it out. That is it.
Is this what your experience had been with Trinity?

No. It's a Live CD, so it boots and runs directly from the CD. Since Windows isn't running, it can clean up persistent infections that are difficult to handle with Windows running.

Oh!. I am looking for a situation where the anti-virus installed on or within Windows itself has become victim/target of a virus/spy-ware. And if we can handle all this, without having to re-install/format existing Windows OS again.

There is also this MS toolkit useful to extracting root kits:
http://connect.microsoft.com/systemsweeper

It also creates a livecd that you boot to remove viruses from an infected Windows PC.

The Trinity Rescue Kit does not do anything that would require you to reinstall your existing Windows. It runs outside Windows so it can clean it better.

Thanks Joe, I am going to give a try on Trinity. Peter, I may be too suspicious but with an infected machine how do I be confident that the bootable generated on it will be virus-free.

Don't download or burn the livecd from an infected machine. Borrow someone else's machine to do the download and burn. Then boot the infected machine with the livecd.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
