Does this book cover real world examples of when to use patterns and when not to?

Yes. In each chapter

In each chapter we introduce a design pattern with a description of the problem it solves and we tell a war story showing how the pattern can be used in real life to solve a problem or how the inappropriate use of a pattern can cause more problems, then it goes on to show an implementation of the pattern in Java SE, then how that pattern's implementation changes in Java EE. We finish each chapter with a discussion about the patterns usage, pitfalls and gotchas.

Why not visit amazon and have a look inside in order to get a feel of the book. I am sure you will like it: Professional Java EE Design Patterns
