1. There's one "sport" in which neither the spectators

the contest ends.
What is it? Boxing.

Niagara Falls. The rim is worn down about two and a
half foot each year because of the millions of
gallons of water that rush over it every minute.

3. Of all vegetables, only two can live to produce on
their own for several growing seasons. All other
vegetables must be replanted every year. What are
the only two perennial vegetables?
Asparagus and rhubarb.

4 Name the only sport in which the ball is always in
possession of the team on defense, and the offensive
team can score without touching the ball?
Baseball.

5. What fruit has its seeds on the outside?
Strawberry.

6. In many liquor stores, you can buy pear brandy,
with a real pear inside the bottle. The pe ar is
whole and
ripe, and the bottle is genuine--it hasn't been cut in
any way. How did the pear get inside the bottle?
The pear grew inside the bottle. The bottles are
placed over pear buds when they are small, and are
wired in place on the tree. The bottle is left in place
for the whole growing season. When the pears are ripe,
they are snipped off at the stems.

7 Only three words in standard English begin with the

2) I was thinking the Grand Canyon - same reasons as Niagra - its eroding and therefore can be considered to be going backwards in time (bottom of the canyon is older rock)
3) Dont Tomatoes grow every year??
4) I figured if there was only 1 sport it must be cricket (I *know* you can score without hitting the ball in Cricket - I didnt know whether that was legal in Baseball, Softball or Rounders)
5) Not Just Strawberrys - but presumably all the berry family - Raspberry, Boysenberry, Blackberry etc etc...
11) Anyone ever seen processed cucumber for sale? and what counts as 'processing' anyway? Theres plenty of pre-chopped and mixed lettuce available in our supermarket!

Nope.

I don't know about boysenberries, but blackberries, raspberries, blueberries, gooseberries all have the seeds inside.

I was thinking "watermelon." I know people make watermelon rind pickles, but I've never seen that in a store. And grilled Romaine lettuce is a recent fad in American restaurants; I imagine someone, somewhere, sells a frozen dinner with grilled Romaine in it!

But these are some good questions!

Ceratinly 'blue' and 'goose' berries have an intennal seed - but The others are all 'compound' berries containing many seeds in each berry - all of which form in a matrix around the outside of the berry - but with each 'seed' wrapped within its own fleshy material...

I guess it might be debatable whether the 'seed' in internal or not... ??

No sorry!.. lots of gerkhins and similar things which are probably related to cucumber - but not cucumber as such...

Please excuse my ignorance!

A gherkin is a small cucumber (although I understand there's a fruit in the West Indies that's also called a gherkin, but it's not what's sold in the supermarket.)

You're right about the topological complexity of compound berries.

These might not be "common" or "standard", respectively, but surely numerous geeks here would readily recognize both "dweomer" and "dweeb".

8. There are fourteen punctuation marks in English
grammar.

That count sounds rather low to me. Are left and right parenthesis considered a single mark? Same for braces and brackets. It seems like single and double quotes should count as at least two - more if we include opening and closing versions of each. This question must predate ASCII.

Add sabots, soccer cleats, and skin.

Strawberry.

According to the ever pedantic Wikipedia:

The strawberry is an accessory fruit; that is, the fleshy part is derived not from the ovaries (which are the "seeds", actually achenes) but from the peg at the bottom of the hypanthium that held the ovaries. So from a technical standpoint, the seeds are the actual fruits of the plant, and the flesh of the strawberry is a vegetable.

I'd be surprised if someone was looking through the window- we live on the fourth floor of a block of flats!

I was referring more to the bit about not knowing the score or leader until it ends, but I guess it can be a spectator sport when its on the telly
