Human-Object Information Processing Research Laboratory
The HOIP (Human-0bject Information Processing) research laboratory of Softopia Japan, Gifu, Japan, is URGENTLY looking for two talented, experienced, and highly motivated software engineers who are interested in coming to Japan and joining a research and development project in human sensing and 3-D modeling. The ultimate goal of the project is a)
the establishment of an intelligent room for the automatic detection and recognition of humans and actions as a welfare system, and b) the 3-D modeling of an urban environment by use of a real-time stereo omnidirectional sensor for urban management applications. The duration of the project, from November 1, 2000 is 4 years, ending on September
30, 2004.
The assignment, a challenging one, is to assist in the development, integration and testing of both systems within the duration of the project.
Job requirements include :
1) a B. Sc. (minimum requirement) or preferably an M. Sc. (or equivalent experience) in electrical engineering or in computer science; background in image processing (particularly pattern recognition techniques and/or 3-D modeling); experience with statistical modeling and statistical learning techniques a plus, though not a necessity; Knowledge of camera systems an asset. The ideal candidate will be familiar with making the transition between research and production code.
2) core set of abilities :
production-oriented (as opposed to academic) C/C++ programming in a UNIX/Windows environment. Knowledge of MatLab an asset but not required. Experience with SGI workstations preferred. Graphical user interface experience (object-oriented environment an asset).
3) Software management skills: maintaining revision control,
familiarity with managing groupware GUI programming environments.
The starting salary is 3,585,600 Japanese Yen (or about $30,150 US) per annum for the candidate who has just graduated with a B.Sc., and 4,473,600 Yen (or about $37,600 US) for the candidate who has 5 years experience after graduating with a B. Sc. (M. Sc. counts for 2 years experience) -free of taxes within Japan. Softopia Japan will pay travel expenses from the country of origin to Japan and back, and will arrange for accommodations. The starting date is anytime from February 2001. The
contract is one year, renewable until the end of the project. English is required, and an interest in Japan and Japanese culture is desirable.
