I have just bought a Pentium 4 computer with 1.4 gig. But, I cannot run Java or VisualAge on it. I have Windows 98 installed and also Windows 2000 (dual boot). I have mainly tried the installs on Windows 98.
With Java, I have loaded up version 3.1 from a disk. The load worked, but when I try to compile a java class, I get an error message "error: cannot read: Test.java".
When I tried to load VisualAge version 3 or version 3.02, I get an error "JRE caused an invalid page fault in module <unknown> at 0000.00000009" and points to a number of registers.
The shop I bought the computer from says the problem is that the computer is too fast for this software and suggested I try to find patches to download on the internet. I tried downloading 2 more recent versions of Java - j2sdk-1_3_1_01-win and j2sdk-1_3_1_01a-win. The download worked but the installation failed - "corrupt cabinate file".
I also tried downloading VisualAge4 from the IBM site. Again, download worked but install failed - "contends of this file cannot be unpacked. Executable has been corrupted ....".
HELP!!! Can you suggest anywhere I can download patches to my software to help me get Java and VisualAge running. Or, do you think it is a fault with the computer? It seems crazy that I can't do anything I want to with my new computer!!

I would say your saleman is full of #%*$. I too have the Intel pentium 4 1.4GHz, with 256M RAM. My computer runs both visual age 3.5 and 4.0 perfectly fine. In fact I haven't had a crash or workspace inconsistent w repos. yet. This is also running on win98, I haven't tried it on my XP partition yet, although I know it works on XP. Other than what i've told you I cannot help no more, but I do know it runs(the saleman saying that it's running to fast seems like a cover up job to me).

Hi,
I dont believe your salesman, all I could say that if you fail to install/run properly, then either try to install it in win2000 or reinstall your win98 and then install software. Try to download the latest version of software and install it.
