Eclipse 3 needs J2SDK 1.4 to run, but it looks as though you're starting it with J2SDK 1.3. The missing org.xml classes are going to be jjst one symptom of this problem. Upgrade your Java install and everything should be fine.

My eclipse version is 3.0.1

My Eclipse Version 2.1 does not have the above problem though, and they are on the same PC.

Have a look at the path variable of your operating system environment. If you have several java versions installed the 1.4 has to be the first one of them in the path!
e.g. ...;C:\Program Files\j2sdk1_4_2_04\jre\lib;C:\Program Files\j2sdk1_4_2_04\bin;C:\Program Files\jdk1.3.1_08\bin;C:\Program Files\jdk1.3.1_08\jre\lib;...

(I presume Eclipse Version 2.1 runs on java 1.3 or below so the problem won't occur for it.)

This is most common problem if you have installed Oracle or similar tools which add their JRE references to your path. As Java will use the first JRE it encounters, it might be picking 1.3 or other set by Oracle client.

Modify your path environment variable and add entry as:
SET path=C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03\jre\bin;%path%

where C:\j2sdk1.4.2_03 is my JAVA_HOME

This should fix the problem.

You were dead on...I had installed Oracle client and had Eclipse running. Several hours later when I happened to re-start my machine I could not get Eclipse going with the mentioned error.

Thanks
