Please help me understand difference between
1.J2EE project
2.Web Project
3.Java Project

How do I know what type of project option to select (in Eclipse) when one has existing code.

This question is really only meaningful in the context of a particular IDE. Moving to "IDEs, Version Control, and other tools."

Gemini,
Eclipse doesn't have the concept of a J2EE project on it's own. What plugin are you using for J2EE?

In answer to your question:
A Java Project maps to code that can be turned into a jar file
A Web Project maps to code that can be turned into a war file (WEB-INF, web.xml, jsps, servlets, etc)

I have MYECLIPSE plugin installed. Is this why I see option of J2EE project in Eclipse here?

Yes.

A J2EE project is a project that can be part of an EAR. This includes EAR projects, EJB projects and Web projects.
