I am new to Linux, and I recently installed the jsdk1.3. On the command shell I used export to add the bin directory to $PATH. To test it i typed java -version. Success!
Only thing is it's not permanent, each time I exit the shell and go back, I need to issue export command again. I know in Windoze I could go to System properties to make it permanent.
Appreciate any help.

you need to edit your .bash_profile file...
on my Redhat7.0 and 7.1 machines i typed:
$ pico ~/.bash_profile
check what i wrote in this thread a couple weeks ago: Click here...
add those lines to your file and then reboot.
