Hi,
i have a problem regarding a redhat 6.1 linux server suddenly freezing totally at random periods. it is using kenel 2.2.12-20smp with 1GB of RAM, intel etherexpress pro card and running apache 1.3.20 with mod_perl. server ran well for about a year until a month back. it suddenly freeze and become totally unresponsive both on network and on console. it has to be rebooted. we do get kernel oops messages like,
wait_on_bh, CPU 0:
irq: 0 [0 0]
bh: 1 [0 1]
<[c010a385] [c016881e] [c0162e6b] [c0163108] [c016f91e] [c01533cb] <br /> [c01537c5] [c012611d]>
we tested the hardware (HP LPr server) but it came through alright. i have searched and it seems many people have this problem with smp servers even with latter kernels but couldn't find any solution or proper clue. any help will be appreciated.
thanks

"usman_wahid",
The Java Ranch has thousands of visitors every week, many with surprisingly similar names. To avoid confusion we have a naming convention, described at http://www.javaranch.com/name.jsp .
We require names to have at least two words, separated by a space, and strongly recommend that you use your full real name. Please log in again with a new name which meets the requirements.
Thanks.

Usman,
if you are using SMP, it would be better to upgrade to a
2.4.* kernel. The SMP support in the 2.2.* kernels is rudimentary.
About your problem, I guess you can have a look at the logs
to see what is going there. Do you spot anything unusual? Any process using huge amounts of memory/CPU before it freezes?
