With windows you just right click on the desktop, select properties/settings ....
I have a monitor that can handle the higher res, but I can't figure out how to tell KDE that I want to use a higher res. It's probably something really simple and I'm too thick to see it.

Try holding down CTRL key and ALT key
and hitting '+' to increase and '-' to decrease the resolution. This would only use screen resolution values you selected if and when you configured X-Windows using 'XF86Config'.
If the above doesnt work, back up your XF86Config file and run the config once again.

That made the desktop bigger, but the physical screen resolution stayed the same. When the mouse nears an edge, the desktop slides.

Try the second option but only after you have backed up the existing file.

when you run XF86Config, it'll ask you up to three choices of screen res.., select the one which is suitable for you.
Also see if 'startx' has any options for setting the screen resolution. (man startx should help)

Paul - If your concern is font size, then the bad news is KDE has about a bazillion places to set fonts. That's also the good news.
You set the main screen fonts in the KDE Control Center.
Individual apps can (and a lot do) set their own default fonts. Each should have some place ('options'??) to change them.

I found out that the current resolution is 1024x768. I would like to go higher. I usually use 1600x1200, but it's possible that this box cannot go that high. Still, something higher would be nice.
The XF86Config thing sounds like more than I want to take on right now. It seems every time I jump into that level of adventure with linux, something gets seriously screwed up and I spend three days fixing it. I would rather leave it as is than tweak those files.
