Hi all,
I want to buy an external modem to work with linux on my box. I though I will buy an external modem instead of a card, so that I can use it for other purposes if required.
Can someone tell me the advantages/disadvantages of using external modem (outside the computer) Vs using a (real, not winmodem) card. I mean performance wise, cost wise, etc..
Also, if I decide to buy an external modem, will I be able to use it for receiving faxes while my computer is off? I mean can I buy a fax (data) modem and use it as an external modem for linux as well as to receive (no need to send) faxes while my computer is off?
Any help is greatly appreciated..

I don't know anything about the relative virtues/vices of external modems, but I think I can say with certainty that you can't receive faxes when your computer is off. A modem is a communication device and doesn't do any data processing or storage. So if your computer is off, where would the fax go when the modem received it?

Thank you for your answer..
Here is another related question:
If I buy a fax machine, since it already has a modem in it which is an external real modem, can I connect it to my computer and use it for connecting to internet?
(Please bear with my ignorance )

Just to add a little to what Bodie sid, you can now buy fax modems with built in memory for receiving faxes, and even fetching email from remote servers when your PC is turned off. For an example see:

Frank,
Thank you. This is the kind of modem I am looking for. Do you know if anyone markets this brand in USA? And if this has a driver for Linux?
Thanks.
