I'm not sure I understand. A Banner is a "click-through" ad, so you need to get the page presenter (infoPop) to insert it, and you need to have an ad target. In other words, it's just another graphic hyperlink.
So what I'm unclear on is whether you needed to know who to contact to insert the ads, or are you soliciting for ad targets? If you're looking to get Red Hat to adverstise here (and thus help subsidise the forum), I'd contact their ad department. Ditto for other distros.
For that matter, it probably wouldn't hurt Sun to run some Solaris (or even Star Office) ads here.

I control the banners here.
I'm trying to think of who I want to promote.
Star Office is a good idea.
Should I promote red hat? Somebody else?
I don't feel linux savvy enough to make a good decision here.

Hi,
The four I think you should promote are:
Debian GNU/Linux, (Popular with Die hard Linux users)
Red Hat, (Fast becoming the Corporate standard for Linux)
SuSE (Very popular in Europe)
Mandrake (Popular with Linux newbies)
NOTE: All of this is in my own humble opinion, no flames please!
While we're on free/open source software Paul, how about ads/links to the Jakarta project?
Cheers,
Mark

I'm working on promoting two jakarta projects: ant and jboss. Have yet to receive a banner on either.

Let's think a bit about doing the right thing.
It would seem that the idea of the banner is that some people might try it out.
Let's say that we have somebody that is a java greenhorn. They see the banner and think "I'm gonna try Linux!" - in the long run, maybe they will ditch windows and go with linux. I would think that this would be our goal.
So it seems that the stuff that is made for the serious linux/unix guys would be out. We would want to pick something that is going to be the best for the newbie. After they get a little experience with one flavor, they might be willing to try other flavors later.
Right now, my gut says red hat (cuz it seems to be the most popular) or mandrake (because Mark says it's the best for newbies).

Instead of StarOffice why not OpenOffice?
http://www.openoffice.org/
Of course neither one of them is written in Java.

What's the diff between open office and star office?
I think promoting star office is good, but I thought I heard that they were going to start charging for it.

Star Office 5.2 still free, I think they want to start charging for 6.0. I seem to remember a price tag of about $75. All this info is available at Sun.
Maybe a link on this forum to another JR page: '*nix Links', ala what is done in SCWCD.
You could cover most of the popular Linux distros as well as apps, include BSD and other Unices.
That does not address banner ads of course .... which I personally don't look at.

I'm not really sure if it's appropriate to promote IBM here, but they have a lot of useful resources for Linux newbies on their Developerworks site - tutorials, manuals and so on.

i started using linux before i came to javaranch, but i have become more interested and confident after getting the JDK installed and working. i am running Red Hat 7.2 and think it would be suitable for newbies such as myself.
just a couple weeks ago my windows partition crashed and i have been "forced" to use linux for all of my programming/computing needs... that is a lot with my current class schedule in school. however, just today i got my DVD drive to work... i think i am finally Gates-free!
anyway, i agree with these:
  • Red Hat 7.x
  • Opera (i installed it today... awesome browser)
  • Star Office (i have 5.2 - it's free and i do not have to use MS-Office anymore)
  • Open Office (open... duh)

I think alot of greenhorns depend on stepping thro' java code line by line in a debugger - I know I did as a newby. Perhaps ant wouldn't be so good as a banner for an IDE with a good debugger that runs OK under Linux. I don't know if there is one though - I use ant!
    Just my 2c worth.

As for Java IDE - check out AnyJ at www.netcomputing.de - very nice IDE with lots of features and free for use under Linux.

Instead of promoting a specific LINUX distro, why not just support LINUX? There a several web pages that have links and information on all the popular and some on the not so popular distributions. However, if I had to suggest specific distro's, I would say SUSE and Mandrake.

I think we have an embarrassment of riches here. If we REALLY ran banners for everyone, I fear that the lack of repetition would do more harm than good. O know I've missed some interesting products because I clicked beyond a page with a banner on it, then did a double-take and clicked back only to see a completely unrelated banner. Also, if we're plugging 14 different distros, I'm afraid that we're more likely to scare people off! Even though each and every one of them is a preffered choice for at least one person out there.
Hearkening back to simpler times, I seem to recall that some of the sites I found most useful in my earlier Linux dats were The Linux Documentation Project (tldp.org), linux.org and kernel.org. These days I usually make a morning reading of linuxtoday.com.
Of course I have no complaints about seeing commercial banners from Red Hat and IBM (hopefully they'll find it worthwhile to help defray the cost of keeping the Ranch going).
Re: other diversions on this thread - unless Sun's changed it, Star Office is supposed to be $75 (or less, depending on licensing) for StarOffice 6.
And I've recently become a convert to Eclipse (http://www.eclipse.org) for GUI-based Java debugging. I found it much easier than Sun's Forte
and it seems to have better performance as well.

    My $0.02 on a distro.
RedHat is often regarded as *being* linux (I have mixed feelings about that).

And Mandrake is great for newbies.

    OpenOffice is great.
We might want a banner to Mozilla
I'm pretty sure they have banners on their site.

You know it is dark times when the trees riot. I think this tiny ad is their leader:
