i use emacs on my redhat machine... there is also an Xemacs version, but i have not tried it before.
emacs is installed by default on redhat, so i am sure it is with mandrake and other flavors as well. it does color, indentation, commenting blocks, and a bunch of other stuff depending on the language you are using. i am currently using Ada95 and i love the way emacs works with it. also, it does postscript printing straight to your printer, so you can print in color as well.

Emacs apparently gets a touch of heartburn when dealing with modes embedded within other modes (such as java within html). I don't blame it. I don't know what the state of the art is for JSPs, since I am content to live without syntax coloring and auto-completion most of the time, but there has been a fair amount of work done, so it's worth checking out.
Sun's Forte does intelligent JSP editing - providing you have about 512MB of RAM and a 1GHz+ CPU. Like all Java IDE's, it's a pig - which is why most of my development is done with emacs. IBM's Eclipse project is designed to support such things, although I don't know if anyone has developed one yet. Its hunger for resources seems comparable to Forte's.
I think I may have heard some good news about Borland's JBuilder for Linux, too.

The best text editor in my opinion is VIM. It stand for "vi-Improved". There is a Syntax option on the menu where you can pick different syntax coloring specific to a programming language. VIM has syntax color for JSP (which is different from its syntax coloring with Java!). This is freeware and available for all sorts of operating systems, and might even already be installed (by default) on your Linux box. If you still don't have it, go to:
http://www.vim.org
and download.
Good luck!

Just a little pre-emptive moderating, here.
Please everyone feel free to suggest more alternatives, but I'd prefer we don't slip into a traditional emacs/vi battle, so I'd apprectate we concentrate on the benefits offered by our own suggestions rather than the defects of others.
Thanks. Now back to your regular programming.

Can I clarify exactly what is being asked for, too? I gather you are looking for an editor with understanding of JSP syntax. I guess this means highlighting of HTML in the HTML sections and Java in the scriptlets.
What I'm not so sure about is the actual environment you want this editor to run in. is it just the JSPs that run on a unix box, or is that the only box you have available to edit them? I edit most of my JSPs on Windows, for example, although they are deployed on Unix.
If you do need an editor which runs on Unix, what sort of UI are you using ? A direct console on a Linux machine (text or SVGA graphics ?), an X GUI (KDE/Gnome/Other), a telnet/ssh session, or something else entirely?
The more you can tell us about what you are looking for, the more we can probably help.

i am too new to linux to engage in a EMACS-vs-VIM flame war... but i do know this can be a nasty debate! i think i will try VIM this weekend and see what i think... ( then i will come back an flame )

if you do decide to go with gvim (the graphic version of vim), some commands that might help you in doing jsp development is
syntax on
autoindent
cindent
There are *tons* of pages written about how to make gvim work with C/C++ most of this infomation will also be useful to Java programmers. If anyone know of any g/vim pages dedicated to Java programmers *please* post. I've been trying to get gvim to work with Ant for a bit and I *know* its supposed to work.
