Hi everyone,
i am a linux newbie. I have been around the Java world for a while, and choose to setup a small linux box at home to act as a web/ftp/application server for my Java apps.
everything is running fine ( no Gui has been installed, everything from the prompt ). My problem is trying to connect to this machine remotely. I thought that the sshd was automatically installed ( i guess not ). could anyone give me a hand on how to install and configure the ssh daemon to run on this box. I have downloaded the client ( putty ) onto my XP box. i tried to see if there were any ssh processes running ( ps -ef | grep ssh ) nothing found.
i would appreciate any help, from you, or a link to a how-to site.
thanks a million
Tim

I think that OpenSSH was installed by default on your box. When you start the Linux do you see the message:
Start sshd: OK
Also check the following thing: go to etc/init.d directory and see if you have the "sshd" in there. Try the following commands:
./sshd stop
./sshd start
To run the sshd as the daemon do the following:
chkconfig sshd on

Hi,
thanks for the reply. I had a chance to talk to the UNIX admin where i work and he said the same thing. I checked and the module was not installed. I just re-installed the box ( there was other stuff i wanted to install as well, such as a GUI ).
everything works fine now.
thanks
Tim
