Hi to all. Please help me with these problems:
1) Mandrake will not log me in at the login (graphical)
screen. When I supply the correct username and
password, then press the login button, the screen
just flickers for a few seconds and then comes back
with the username and password fields cleared.
I am supplying the correct details, have double-cheked
this. I don't see a "Login Failed". This problem is
happening when I'm trying to log into KDE, iceWin works.
It only works if I log in as root. This is so
frustrating because I don't want to login as root
all the time.
2. While browsing a page in Mozilla and then press
the down/up keyboard buttons for a few seconds, the
scrolling happens endlessly until the end of the document.
Very erratic. Why? Again this happens when I'm not
logged in as root. In root everything is fine.
I'm now thinking of switching over to Red Hat. Is that
better than Mandrake??
Thanks for your help in advance.

Will the system let you log in at a regular (non-graphical) terminal session? This sounds to me like you have something wrong in one of the login scripts for that user. Try logging in as root, then type
su username
to see if it complains about anything. If that works, press Ctrl-D to return to root, then try:
su - username
If these show no problems, and you can log in fine on a regular text console, then the problem is probably with how you have configured the X desktop environment for that user. That's beyond my expertise, as I very rarely use any GUI on Linux, so maybe some of the others can help.

Thanks Frank, both your experiments work. I can login fine using a console too. What intrigues me is that this thing was working before but it has just started to happen now. Maybe it's my laptop graphics card. It's a Toshiba desigend for Windows XP. Actually this is not the first time this has happened, I installed Mandrake 8.2 before and after a few days the same problem started to occur. I uninstalled it. Any more help from anybody??
