We plan to run Java batch processes(applications/programs) on an IBM Mainframe (z/OS).
1-Can we use IBM JCL(job control language) to start/invoke a Java program?
2-Can Java return runtime status information (run success or failure)?

This is off the IBM site:
An example of JCL used to run a Java application as a batch job:
//JBATCH JOB ' ','JDOE',CLASS=A,MSGCLASS=H,
//MSGLEVEL=(1,1),
// REGION=0M,TIME=1440,NOTIFY=&SYSUID
//*******************************************
//* RUN AN OE PROGRAM FROM BATCH
//*
//*******************************************
//STEP1 EXEC PGM=BPXBATCH,
// PARM='SH java JavaPgmName'
//STDOUT DD PATH='/tmp/stdout',
// PATHOPTS=(OWRONLY,OCREAT,OTRUNC),
// PATHMODE=SIRWXU
//STDERR DD PATH='/tmp/stderr',
// PATHOPTS=(OWRONLY,OCREAT,OTRUNC),
// PATHMODE=SIRWXU

Hope this helps,
