Error while initializing the sound driver

device /dev/dsp can't be opened. (No such device)

The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

Ugh. I don't know if you've ever looked at the multimedia/audio setup in Windows, but there's a LOT more to sound on a PC than you'd think. Same in Linux. Most likely your low-level sound hardware wasn't detected and configured. Try running sndconfig if you've got one. Next up is tldp.org and the Sound HOWTO. Also you could look at ALSA, but that's bordering desperation for the casual user.
On my fast computer, I have a builtin AC-97 "sound card". Red Hat 7.2 could pick up on it, but they broke it in RH 8. I hope it was fixed in RH 9, but I haven't tried that yet. I built my own drivers and ran on them for a while.
